Why do I need my braces adjusted?

When you have braces, your wires will need to be replaced or adjusted at regular intervals. It is the slow, steady pressure placed on your teeth that move them into their desired positions, so these adjustments are a vital aspect of your treatment. Dr. Chow has set out a specific treatment plan to achieve your optimal results, and keeping up with your appointments will allow your treatment to be completed in the predicted amount of time.

Scheduling your adjustments sooner than planned may result in more pain and discomfort, as well as slower tooth movements!  Your teeth need time to move appropriately, or else they may become bogged down.  Conversely, skipping or missing appointments or scheduling them farther apart will result in a much longer treatment time.

Your appointment intervals will be customized according to your treatment and the specific tooth movements required at each stage of treatment.  Don’t be surprised if Dr. Chow asks to see you back in 8, 10, or even 12 weeks after an adjustment!  Our braces and wires will continue to move your teeth throughout that entire period.  However, don’t forget to monitor your own progress throughout your treatment, and check for damaged appliances and loose brackets!
