Ask Dr. Chow: "My son is six—when should he be seen for an orthodontic evaluation?"

Thanks for asking!  The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should be evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of 7. There are times when a simple and straightforward early developmental treatment is indicated to correct specific orthodontic needs before they become major problems.  In these circumstances, the patient will most likely benefit from a second phase of orthodontics when all of their permanent teeth have erupted to completely address the remaining orthodontic needs.

However, it really depends on the dental age of the patient rather than their chronological age.  As a guide, it is usually a good time for our initial orthodontic evaluation after the front two permanent teeth have erupted into the mouth or if there appears to be extreme crowding of the teeth.

If no early interceptive treatment is recommended for your child, we will suggest that they join our Pre-Orthodontic Guidance Program for bi-annual orthodontic checkups to ensure that the teeth and jaws continue to grow well.  This will also allow us to identify any problems that arise during growth, and recommend any necessary treatment at the optimal time.  Most patients in our Pre-Orthodontic Guidance Program are ready for a single phase of full orthodontic treatment between ages 10 and 15, which typically lasts from 15-24 months.

Please keep in mind that our initial consultations are complimentary for both children and adults, and do not require a referral from your dentist.  We invite you to give us a call to setup your consultation, and be a part of our patient family at Panorama Orthodontics.
